A bit of fast work for Fulham

Posted on 15 June 2010

Ask any premiership groundsman about the toughest aspect of his job in late season and he’ll probably say that it’s juggling priorities between getting to the end of the current season and planning for the next one. Richard Haynes of Fulham faced just such a problem at their Motspur Park training ground in South London where, before work could start on some major pitch renovation, repairs to some other practice pitches had to be made so that the training show could stay on the road. That’s where we came in, supplying and laying 250 square metres of FibreTurf™ in 8 different areas around 3 goal mouths which all need needed levelling before the turf could be laid.

“In stark contrast to some other contractors I’ve come across, Inturf were well prepared before they ever started, carried the work out quickly and efficiently, and left the site as tidy as you could wish for when they finished,” says Richard. “The turf was also of a very high quality and is now growing well and knitting in nicely. It was a first rate effort”

Name Check: Fulham is the oldest of London’s first class clubs which has had some legendary footballers gracing its teams. Among the most famous is another Haynes: England captain Johnny Haynes, one of the most gifted players of his generation, spent his entire first class career at Fulham between 1952 and 1970. The original Maestro, Haynes made the unprecedented step of becoming the first footballer to earn £100 a week

Practice makes perfect at The Grove

The course

The Grove is one of England’s finest luxury golf courses with greens kept in immaculate Championship condition all year round. The 18 hole, 7,152 yard course follows a majestic route through the rolling leafy Hertfordshire landscape with fully integrated cart paths which are open all year round. In 2006 The Grove staged the World Golf Championship and it has been ranked in Golf World’s Top 100 UK Courses and achieves consistently high ratings in the prestigious Peugeot Golf Guide. The Grove Voted 2nd 2010 Modern Golf Course in England by Golf Week.

The problem

The practice greens were originally seeded in 2001 but, despite the very highest standards of greensmanship, have suffered from the twin depredations of invasion by annual meadow grass and the results of excessive shade from nearby trees. Heavy usage of this popular course facility made reseeding impractical so the decision was taken to
re-turf.

The solution

Inturf supplied 1000 sq metres of custom grown greens turf plus 1500 sq metres of Classic turf for the greens surrounds. We laid the turf in two phases since the key to the operation was speed. Course Manager Phil Chiverton comments “We needed the least disruption possible to the facilities – our course has to be 100% immaculate and 100% available at all times. We were really impressed with the quality of the turf we saw on an inspection visit to Inturf and very very pleased with the back up service. The improvement in the practice greens is fantastic: the new turf has established really well.”

New TerraCottem Turf Soil Conditioner

Posted on 20 February 2010

terracottem-turf-2401TerraCottem Turf is an innovative new soil conditioner designed especially for golf and sports turf applications. It harnesses a unique combination of over twenty hydroabsorbent and nutritive components to significantly improve soil quality and water retention for healthier, more vigorous turf.

Improved root growth, vigour, structure, performance and disease resistance are just a few of the benefits users can expect, together with a reduction in water and nutrient inputs otherwise needed to maintain turf in optimum condition.

Inturf’s joint managing director Alex Edwards says: “The launch of a TerraCottem soil conditioner tailored to the golf and sports turf market is fantastic news for UK greenkeepers and groundsmen, who can now make full use of this established and leading technology.”

“We now have the best of both worlds - proven technology plus added elements to optimise healthy grass growth.”

TerraCottem Turf was launched by Inturf at Harrogate Week, in January 2010.

We’ve signed up to 10:10 - a turf company trying to be even greener!

Everyone is looking for something to do about climate change. What’s needed is something straightforward, immediate and meaningful. We think we’ve found it. We’ve joined thousands of individuals and organisations from across the UK to unite behind one simple idea: a 10% cut in carbon emissions during 2010. It’s called 10:10, and we want you to be a part of it.

Cutting 10% in one year is a bold target, but for most of us it’s an achievable one, and is in line with what scientists say we need right now. By signing up to 10:10 we’re not just promising to reduce our own emissions as a business – we’re becoming part of a national drive to hit this ambitious goal in every sector of society.

We need to start spreading the word to every corner of the country, inviting our friends, family, colleagues, customers, competitors – everyone we know – to take part.

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change, but by bringing everyone together to take action collectively, 10:10 enables all of us to make a meaningful difference. It’s the perfect opportunity to find out what’s possible when we work together.

10:10 is an idea whose time has come. Let’s get started.

The Ricoh story: Fibre Turf glory!

Posted on 17 July 2009

Definitely maybe would certainly not be good enough: it had to be definitely, for certain, for sure. After unavoidable damage to the pitch following an Oasis concert we were contracted to strip off the old turf, prepare the ground and install 2400 square metres of new Fibre Turf - nearly all in a single day.

By 9am on 14th July we had the necessary stocks of superwide big roll (cut at 45mm depth) on site. Work to strip off the old pitch had started earlier.

Thanks to careful preparation and the sheer amount of turf which can be laid quickly in the this large roll format the job was all-but finished by 5pm. The Masterplan worked!

If ever you needed convincing that big roll has a big contribution to make to the efficiency of your operation this picture should help. Some of our best turf, harvested in peak condition in big roll format: ready to be laid far more quickly and much more economically than the conventional smaller roll. This really is an ideal way to save time and money on larger projects.

Spreading rootzone - on rather a large scale!

Recent orders for creeping bentgrass from 3 golf courses in the London area necessitated spreading 25000 square metres of rootzone at our Grantham turf farm. This may not seem much when set against the over 5 million square metres of stock we have in the in the ground at any one time or annual sales of 2 million square metres - but this turf is for extremely prestigious golf venues and we are very pleased to be involved.

All smiles at the Wales Open

Jeppe Huldahl of Denmark wasn’t the only one smiling at this year’s Wales Open at the Celtic Manor. As a major supplier to the course and a partner in its hosting of the Ryder Cup in 2010, we were delighted to entertain 12 guests from different parts of our world during the event.

Turf professionals and landscape contractors, landscape architects and agronomists rubbed shoulders more than amicably - and, in the best INTURF tradition, a good time was had by all!
