Inturf how to header

Praise from Carnoustie: does it get any better than this?

Posted on 27th January 2012

We are always pleased to get feedback from the profesionals we work with but this, from John Philp, Course Manager at Carnoustie, one of the world's most admired professionals at one of the world's greatest courses, really meant a great deal to everyone at Inturf:

"We are delighted to continue our relationship with INTURF as our turf supplier here at Carnoustie. INTURF has custom-grown turf to suit our requirements for some years now and both the quality and consistency of the turf produced along with an excellent service and value for money has been most appreciated."

There's nothing we can possibly add to that except: thank you John!

Great Danes choose INTURF

Posted on 16th December 2011

The Parken Stadium in Copenhagen is home not only to the Danish National side but also to local team FC Copenhagen. Like most world class sporting venues the stadium is host to a wide variety of other events and activities including performances by the biggest international names from rock and pop, speedway, tournaments and dance raves.

The pitch management of such a well-used and versatile venue requires experience and skill of the highest calibre so it is with some pride that we report that this important task is undertaken by Englishman Chris Hague who earned his grounds keeping spurs at the original Wembley, but who has lived and worked in Denmark now for over a decade. “As a northerner the big culture shock in my life was moving south to Wembley,” jokes Chris. “The move to Denmark was far less daunting!” It was at Wembley that Chris first worked with Inturf who supplied lay and play turf for the goal areas. “ We were impressed back then at how quickly the turf established and how well it behaved in play,” he says.

Events at the Parken throughout 2011 indicated that a new pitch would be needed to meet the demands of the forthcoming round of international fixtures as well as club play. “We had a number of events running right through the summer culminating in a huge rave in October,” says Chris. “The tricky aspect was that international matches were scheduled for early November so the timescale for change was very tight.” When it came to deciding who would supply the new pitch Chris had the pick of production throughout Europe. “As a national stadium we are in constant contact with all the major turf growers,” he says. “When the time came to choose I was most impressed by the quality of the Inturf offer: it was absolutely the right turf - in peak condition - just when we needed it.”

The decision having been made, the operation to make the change got underway in the hands of Parken Stadium’s trusted installation partners Support in Sport with whom they have worked for many years. “Support in Sport are responsive, reliable and very experienced in the quick turnaround demanded in multi-use stadia,” says Chris. The old pitch was removed on October 31st and the new one installed in rapid time in a huge logistical operation that involved 30 articulated lorry-loads of turf crossing the North Sea. Within 10 days of laying there were 3 training matches and 3 full fixtures including an international against Norway on the 11th.

“The pitch received very warm plaudits from UEFA,” says Chris. “It also produced the right result since Denmark won 2-0. All in all the pitch change went really smoothly thanks to great teamwork - and we are more than pleased with the way it has played since the day it was laid.”

Huge reduction in our carbon emissions makes our turf even greener

Posted on 14th November 2011
In November 2009 we signed up to 10:10 to signal our business commitment to doing something about climate change. We aimed to cut our use of energy by working more efficiently and so achieve a 10% cut in our carbon emissions in the process. In fact, through dramatically reducing our use of electricity, heating oil and diesel we’ve cut our emissions by 18% in the first year – something of which everyone here is justifiably proud since we’ve made a green business even greener.

“We’ve taken a close look at how we use energy in every part of the business,” says Alex Edwards, joint managing director. “Every stage of turf production from sowing to harvesting has been made more efficient. We’ve redesigned our delivery systems too so diesel use – a substantial part of our costs - has been greatly reduced. This is good news not just for the environment but also for our customers since it has meant that we have been able to hold prices much steadier than we might have done otherwise - without affecting turf quality.”

Inturf green suits Robin Hood Golf Club perfectly

Posted on 31st August 2011

Robin Hood Golf Club in the West Midlands is one of those clubs that is as well known for its warm welcome to golfers of all levels as for the quality of the play offered.

Set amongst mature trees and lush fairways, Robin Hood is a most challenging course, with its 17th and 18th accepted as one of the most challenging finishing holes in the West Midlands.

Designed by Harry Colt and steeped in history, Henry Cotton and Henry Longhurst are among its most illustrious visitors, whilst no less a personage than Dr. Frank Stableford, creator of the Stableford scoring system, was a member.

Over the past few years the club has been making a considerable investment to develop and improve the course in order to make it even mo
re attractive and rewarding than in those bygone days.

Its turf partner in that process has been INTURF with over 10000m2 having been supplied across various grades.

The work goes on

Andy Wood, Course Manager at Robin Hood says, “Over the past couple of years we have used various INTURF products (over 10000m2 in total) throughout the re-development to achieve the high end finish we require to greens, tees, greens surrounds and bunker faces. This work will help to maintain Robin Hood Golf Club as one of the Premier Clubs in the Midlands and the INTURF product range is helping us achieve this goal. Work will continue this Autumn and Winter with renovation to the 18th Hole and several bunkers across the course. Once again, INTURF will be the preferred supplier of over 5000m2 of turf.”

A spirit of partnership

From INTURF’S point of view the ongoing work at Robin Hood represents the best kind of partnership between turf grower and customer. We have had time to really understand Andy’s vision for the course and the complex series of stages needed to bring about the desired result. Having worked with us for a number of seasons Andy has had the opportunity better to understand the factors which affect our ability to deliver top quality turf. “What we’ve done for Robin Hood we can do for any golf club anywhere,” says Alex Edwards, our joint managing director. “Just give us a call and we can get together to talk your plans through.”

England’s triumph at Edgbaston takes place on INTURF

Posted on 15th August 2011

The English cricket team’s emphatic victory at Edgbaston took place on turf grown by Inturf.
17000 square metres of custom grown outfield was produced as part of the major redevelopment and improvements to the ground which took place there during the winter, undertaken by main contractor Steven Pask Ltd

“If we say so ourselves the quality of the turf was absolutely superb,” says Alex Edwards, joint managing director. “We actually grew it at our farm near Grantham rather than in Yorkshire in an effort to reduce turf miles when it came to delivery. We know that the Edgbaston authorities and head groundsman Steve Rouse were pleased – but not half as pleased I imagine as they are about the big result!”

Blades of grass help Glen Jackson benefit from dropping the knife with an RHS gold medal

Posted on 26th July 2011

We were pleased to be even a small part of the 'Save a life, drop the knife’ garden by supplying turf. A worthwhile theme was brought to life in a fantastic garden which went on to become a worthy winner of the best show garden category at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park.

Created to empower young offenders at HMP Everthorpe, Glen Jackson, senior horticultural tutor says he was fortunate to have had a very good team. From serrated leaf edges to sword shaped leaves, the plant choices worked together to put across the message.
The project was designed as a rehabilitation exercise and an opportunity to provide essential skills training for Everthorpe inmates across a range of trades. The first garden was created within the prison grounds and was awarded a Prince’s Trust regional award and reached the national finals in the competition. Glen was subsequently invited to display his concept garden at the Tatton Park.

Glen wrote of the garden: Some show gardens try to capture beauty, style or atmosphere; others tell a story. Our garden was firmly in the narrative category: the moving story of young lads struggling to turn away from knife crime. It starts hard and uncomfortable: all jagged, spiky Solanum atropurpureum, fastigiate cypress and jarring red gravel. But through the journey colours and textures become welcoming, with generous-leaved Catalpa bignonioides and strokeable Stipa tenuissima: an essay in how planting changes a mood.

We've just spent two worthwhile days at the Landscape Show organized by the British Association of Landscape Industries at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. This was the first such show and can only be described as a small but very promising start. We felt it was an excellent show for the money, the weather proved good and we saw old and new customers. Inturf aren’t represented very well in that area so we picked up a lot of fresh enquiries from visiting contractors and landscape designers.

TerraCottem® trial proves growth boost at European Turfgrass Society Trials

Posted on 25th June 2011

The effect of new soil conditioner TerraCottem® Turf on water retention of the top layer (water savings), nutrient retention of the top layer (fertiliser savings), soil characteristics such as infiltration, bulk density, resistance to wear and grass root development, were tested recently during the European Turfgrass Society Conference in Ghent. A copy of the full results of the trial (which are based on faultless methodology and sound science) can be sent on request.

Suffice to say that it demonstrated that TerraCottem® Turf makes a significant positive impact in all of these vital areas. TerraCottem® Turf technology is the result of a proprietary scientifically balanced composition consisting of more than 20 different substances based on different acrylamide and acrylic acid copolymers with potassium salt and ammonium salt; NPK fertiliser with magnesium; humic acids; growth precursors and zeolite.nd acrylic acid copolymers with potassium salt and ammonium salt; NPK fertiliser with magnesium; humic acids; growth precursors and zeolite.

Doubts about drought

Posted on 14th June 2011

New turf requires watering for the first 28 days after it has been laid, and there is a Voluntary Code for Water in place which recommends a discretionary 28 day exemption from drought orders for newly laid turf.

It is important for both the environment and the economy that the laying of turf grass continues during the summer months. As well as absorbing CO2, turf also absorbs rainwater, replenishing aquifers, also preventing run-off and flooding.

In the event of any restrictions the Turfgrass Growers Association - of which INTURF is an active member - will ask water companies to implement the 28 day exemption in the spirit of the Voluntary Code mentioned above. See http://www.turfgrass.co.uk/ for more information

Go Green launch: more choice for groundsmen and landscapers...

Posted on 14th June 2011

We now supply a range of landscape products the latest of which is Go Green - a new, high quality and environmentally friendly soil made from a blend of 50% composted green waste and 50% premium quality topsoil, all screened to 10mm. This is a bagged product conforming to all relevant British Standards and is available from any branch of Buildbase or direct from Inturf.

The product was used recently in the creation of the gold medal winning garden for Buildbase at RHS Chelsea (pictured below). Peter Dowle, Managing Director of Plants & Gardens Ltd, main contractor and project management to the Monaco Garden explains: “Go-Green planting medium is an absolute must in show garden planting as it remains workable in a range of conditions.”

Sales are at record levels - across the board

Posted on 6th May 2011

It seems that the old adage is true: when there is doom and gloom on the economic front people turn to their homes, gardens and green spaces. Our sales so far this year have been at record levels across all grades and in all sectors from professional sports venues to private gardens including things like bulk supplies of top soil and bark mulch pictured. We know from colleagues in other parts of the sports and garden industries that the same is true for them. Of course, this helps make up for the appalling weather in the winter months when we couldn’t lift any turf at all for what seemed like weeks on end. However, the sales performance and boost to the industry aside, it is great to think of so much time, effort and money being invested in green spaces. Long may it continue!

Drought brings out the best in Terracottem

Posted on 6th May 2011

– and Terracottem helps bring out the best in landscapes!

The long periods without rain have presented their own problems for all kinds of growers but drought also makes life difficult for those creating landscapes whether on a domestic or larger scale. TerraCottem® reduces the amount of water necessary to create high-quality plants and turf, by up to 50%.

Originally developed to combat desertification in U.N. and other humanitarian projects in Africa, the product is used today by professionals and consumers in more than forty-five countries worldwide to improve the quality and success of their work while reducing water consumption, in landscaping, sport, horticulture, reforestation and gardening.

Don’t let newly delivered turf overheat

Posted on 23 March 2011

Now that spring is here with its warmer days and in the hopes that summer will be what the newspapers call a scorcher, we thought it time to pass on some tips about keeping your cool. Not your cool, but your newly delivered turf's cool.

What you need to know

• Heating of stacked turfgrass post harvest, causes rapid plant tissue deterioration
• Because of the way we have to stack the turf and the time it is sometimes in transit the load can become like a compost heap and can get very hot - which burns the grass
• Grass is most susceptible to this when ground and grass temperatures are high and fertilizer has been applied and the turf watered before lifting. Obviously we need to do both.
• Worse effected turf is that which has been grown on black soils (thankfully ours is sandy and light)
• It’s not exclusive to Inturf, every grower experiences these issues

What you need to do

Be prepared to lay the turf immediately and provide copious amounts of precipitation so that the entire turfgrass is saturated right through to the soil underneath.

If the turf is not going to be laid straight away, you need to de-palletise to allow more air movement and store in a cool and breezy location, bearing in mind every hour in hot weather the turf is left lying around will increase the chances of poor quality.

Brushing and over-sowing will be needed if the turf has already started to deteriorate, together with the watering.

A new breed of slow growing carbon capturing turf
Posted on 24 February 2011

We've launched a new breed of slow growing carbon capturing turf in a joint venture between Inturf, Paynes Turf and Rigby Taylor

CARBON CAPTURE TURF:

  • sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide in the soil at the rate of 13 tonnes per ha per annum within 2½ years of laying. This compares with 2 tonnes per ha per annum for deciduous woodland after 25 years of growth and 11 tonnes per ha per annum for coniferous forest after the same 25 year period;
  • stores a further 47 tonnes of carbon dioxide per ha per annum in the roots of the turf.

In addition to its ability to lock up carbon dioxide at this astonishing rate, CARBON CAPTURE TURF grows at a slower rate than other grass varieties, thus reducing maintenance costs and producing fewer clippings. Supplies of the new turf are available from this spring.

“Turfgrass already plays an important part in the designed landscape by providing the green open spaces which many people - especially city dwellers - long for,” says Brian Robinson, Director of Seed Research for Rigby Taylor. “CARBON CAPTURE TURF enhances the part which turf can play in designing sustainable landscapes with its ability to make an immediate, measurable, and dramatic impact on carbon sequestration and on maintenance costs.”

If sustainability is an issue in projects you're working on then this turf should be in your design toolkit. Give us a call to find out more.

Good to see you at BTME

Posted on 21 January 2011

It was a pleasure as ever to see old friends and make some new ones at BTME 2011. With the pressure growing on promotional budgets there's much discussion about the future format of such shows for our sector (see Horticulture Week 21 January as an example). Whatever format is eventually settled on we feel that even in the age of instant electronic communication it is useful to be able to see so many people face-to-face in such a short space of time. Let us know what you think!

Giving Edgbaston the Inturf edge

Posted on 18 November 2010

We’ve just started lifting and delivering some of the 17000 square metres of custom grown outfield destined for Edgbaston as part of the major redevelopment and improvements to the ground taking place there.

If we say so ourselves the quality of the turf (grown at our farm near Grantham rather than in Yorkshire) is absolutely superb. On reflection, we don’t have to just say so ourselves since we’re told Head Groundsman Steve Rouse is rather pleased too!

More news from Edgbaston to follow as the project takes shape.

Four!

Posted on 3 November 2010

Yes, we mean four rather than fore, the four in question being Celtic Manor in South Wales, Alwoodley  Golf Club in Yorkshire, Ternesse Golf Resort in Belgium and Rungsted Golf Club in the east of Denmark – all of which  are using Inturf in restoration and improvement projects.

The Celtic Manor Ryder Cup Course is undergoing extensive restoration following the damage caused recently when it hosted the Ryder Cup in appalling conditions. “We have a long association with the Celtic Manor,” says Inturf joint managing director Alex Edwards. “We’re delighted to be specified again as they work to get the course ready for the Wales Open. Better still, we’re told that respected course manager Jim Mckenzie is really pleased with the turf quality.” Celtic Manor is taking 3200 square metres of turf a day at present – delivered in Big Roll format to speed up the work.

In the meantime, at Alwoodley, (founded in 1907, and recognised as one of Britain’s finest inland courses) we’ve been busy again, supplying turf for bunker restoration work to the course originally designed by the legendary architect Dr Alister MacKenzie. The restoration is being masterminded by Ken Moodie of Creative Golf Design. A number of bunkers that have been filled are being replaced and sand lines are being raised to recreate MacKenzie’s desired visual effects. Holes seven and thirteen were restored late in 2009 (for which we also supplied turf) while the first, second, seventeenth and eighteenth are being worked on at the moment.

Hopping across the channel we have again supplied turf for the restoration of tees at Rungsted Golf Club in the west of Denmark –  something we have done for several years now. It seems the Danes need to invade east Yorkshire all over again to find just the right turf – an Inturf Masters mixture containing four fescue varieties.

img_02131
Meanwhile their counterparts at Ternesse on the outskirts of Antwerp (Pictured above and below) have just taken delivery of our superb quality Custom Grown Turf with 100% creeping bentgrass A4 variety and some Inturf Classic with Bargold (fine leaved ryegrass) for tee complexes. The turf was delivered in climate controlled trailers to ensure its arrival in peak condition.

inturf-belgium-golf-course-31
“It’s a great credit to the quality of our turf – and to our product ion teams – that we are consistently specified at such prestigious courses,” says Alex Edwards. “It’s especially pleasing to be able to export turf to two countries with a worldwide reputation for being very green themselves!”

Ewe wouldn’t believe where we laid our turf…

’Savile Row Field Day’ saw the world’s most prestigious tailoring location closed to traffic as dozens of sheep grazed in a specially laid pasture created by Inturf.

The event took place under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales and was organised to publicise the benefits of wool clothing and attracted visitors and buyers from around the world  –  as well as considerable publicity in the national press.

“The turf had to be laid during the night so we started at 11pm and worked through until  5 in the morning,” says Inturf joint managing director Alex Edwards. “As befits a project for Savile Row the turf was a tailor-made mixture of grasses including sheep fescue!”

PS on an unusual week: We have also this week delivered greens turf to Terness Golf Club in Antwerp, Belgium. The order was placed on Monday, the turf was harvested on Wednesday, and delivered and laid on Thursday.  The customer is highly delighted - and has already paid the bill!

A bit of fast work for Fulham

Posted on 15 June 2010

Ask any premiership groundsman about the toughest aspect of his job in late season and he’ll probably say that it’s juggling priorities between getting to the end of the current season and planning for the next one. Richard Haynes of Fulham faced just such a problem at their Motspur Park training ground in South London where, before work could start on some major pitch renovation, repairs to some other practice pitches had to be made so that the training show could stay on the road. That’s where we came in, supplying and laying 250 square metres of FibreTurf™ in 8 different areas around 3 goal mouths which all need needed levelling before the turf could be laid.

“In stark contrast to some other contractors I’ve come across, Inturf were well prepared before they ever started, carried the work out quickly and efficiently, and left the site as tidy as you could wish for when they finished,” says Richard. “The turf was also of a very high quality and is now growing well and knitting in nicely. It was a first rate effort”

Name Check: Fulham is the oldest of London’s first class clubs which has had some legendary footballers gracing its teams. Among the most famous is another Haynes: England captain Johnny Haynes, one of the most gifted players of his generation, spent his entire first class career at Fulham between 1952 and 1970. The original Maestro, Haynes made the unprecedented step of becoming the first footballer to earn £100 a week

Practice makes perfect at The Grove

Posted on 15 June 2010

The course

The Grove is one of England’s finest luxury golf courses with greens kept in immaculate Championship condition all year round. The 18 hole, 7,152 yard course follows a majestic route through the rolling leafy Hertfordshire landscape with fully integrated cart paths which are open all year round. In 2006 The Grove staged the World Golf Championship and it has been ranked in Golf World’s Top 100 UK Courses and achieves consistently high ratings in the prestigious Peugeot Golf Guide. The Grove Voted 2nd 2010 Modern Golf Course in England by Golf Week.

The problem

The practice greens were originally seeded in 2001 but, despite the very highest standards of greensmanship, have suffered from the twin depredations of invasion by annual meadow grass and the results of excessive shade from nearby trees. Heavy usage of this popular course facility made reseeding impractical so the decision was taken to
re-turf.

The solution

Inturf supplied 1000 sq metres of custom grown greens turf plus 1500 sq metres of Classic turf for the greens surrounds. We laid the turf in two phases since the key to the operation was speed. Course Manager Phil Chiverton comments “We needed the least disruption possible to the facilities – our course has to be 100% immaculate and 100% available at all times. We were really impressed with the quality of the turf we saw on an inspection visit to Inturf and very very pleased with the back up service. The improvement in the practice greens is fantastic: the new turf has established really well.”

New TerraCottem Turf Soil Conditioner

We’ve signed up to 10:10 - a turf company trying to be even greener!

Posted on 16 November 2009

10-10-logo1

Everyone is looking for something to do about climate change. What’s needed is something straightforward, immediate and meaningful. We think we’ve found it. We’ve joined thousands of individuals and organisations from across the UK to unite behind one simple idea: a 10% cut in carbon emissions during 2010. It’s called 10:10, and we want you to be a part of it.

Cutting 10% in one year is a bold target, but for most of us it’s an achievable one, and is in line with what scientists say we need right now. By signing up to 10:10 we’re not just promising to reduce our own emissions as a business – we’re becoming part of a national drive to hit this ambitious goal in every sector of society.

We need to start spreading the word to every corner of the country, inviting our friends, family, colleagues, customers, competitors – everyone we know – to take part.

It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change, but by bringing everyone together to take action collectively, 10:10 enables all of us to make a meaningful difference. It’s the perfect opportunity to find out what’s possible when we work together.

10:10 is an idea whose time has come. Let’s get started.

Definitely maybe would certainly not be good enough: it had to be definitely, for certain, for sure. After unavoidable damage to the pitch following an Oasis concert we were contracted to strip off the old turf, prepare the ground and install 2400 square metres of new Fibre Turf - nearly all in a single day.

Recent orders for creeping bentgrass from 3 golf courses in the London area necessitated spreading 25000 square metres of rootzone at our Grantham turf farm. This may not seem much when set against the over 5 million square metres of stock we have in the in the ground at any one time or annual sales of 2 million square metres - but this turf is for extremely prestigious golf venues and we are very pleased to be involved.

Jeppe Huldahl of Denmark wasn’t the only one smiling at this year’s Wales Open at the Celtic Manor. As a major supplier to the course and a partner in its hosting of the Ryder Cup in 2010, we were delighted to entertain 12 guests from different parts of our world during the event.

Turf professionals and landscape contractors, landscape architects and agronomists rubbed shoulders more than amicably - and, in the best INTURF tradition, a good time was had by all!
