INTURF are part of a four-strong consortium of growers to have ready stocks of a new breed of turf which has been specially developed by Barenbrug Research to cope with the rigours of climate change.
Rhizomatous Tall Fescue (or Really Tough Turf as it has been described) performs well in drought, doesn’t mind being waterlogged in flooding, thrives in shade, is salt tolerant and is incredibly hard wearing.
“It is the perfect tall fescue for amenity and domestic garden settings, ” says Alex Edwards, joint managing director of Inturf.
“We know from our conversations with landscape specifiers and garden designers that they are actively thinking about the effects of climate change as they plan landscapes.
RTF’s characteristics are such that it will cope well with the extremes of drought and flood which seem to beset us now. Its salt tolerance also makes it ideal for roadside verges as well as coastal sites and its toughness means it can cope with the heaviest pounding. ”
Rhizomatous Tall Fescue turf has been developed in cooperation with Barenbrug, one of Europe’s foremost breeders.
The tall fescue’s unique properties are attributable to its rhizomes and its remarkably deep root system.
“RTF’s root system is bushier, denser, stronger and deeper than anything we’ve seen before, ” says Alex Edwards. “It’s a major breakthrough for people who use grass in amenity landscapes and for designers working with housing developers.
Anyone wishing to come and see the new variety should get in touch with me. ”
Whether you’re producing container grown trees or using them as features in landscapes, the potential for damage or death due to poor and irregular irrigation is all too real.

Typical Properties
Particle size distribution and stone content
Premium Topsoil falls into the sand texture class containing a high proportion of sand-sized particles. Light soils such as this typically have good aeration and drainage properties. The soil is stone-free.
pH Value and Electrical Conductivity (salinity)
Premium Topsoil is alkaline in reaction (pH7.9) and suitable for general landscaping purposes including the majority of tree and shrub species and grass cultivars used in commercial landscaping.
Organic matter and fertility status
Premium Topsoil is adequately supplied with organic matter and all major plant nutrients appropriate to general landscape purposes. No further additions of compost or fertiliser are required or even recommended for at least the first growing season.

Inturf Establish - a high quality, controlled release, mini-granular organic compound fertiliser for use on fine turf, sportsfields and other amenity turf areas.
Typical Properties
Granule size
Granules are typically small in size (1 - 2mm) which allow for easy application and even distribution, breaking down quickly when coming into contact with moisture, thus preventing any risk of scorch and virtually eliminating the problem of mower pick-up.
Organically derived
Establish is 100% organic, containing both vegetable and animal sources - subsequently the phosphorus (3%) and potassium (10%), as well as the nitrogen (5%), are all organic. Establish also contains a wetting agent which further assists the penetration of the nutrients into the sward.
Release rate
The organically bound nutrients are released through the activity of soil microbes which ensures the nutrients are gradually released over a period of several months. This breakdown not only releases traditional nutrients but also organic matter which enhances micro-organism activity.
