Celtic Manor builds on excellence

The Celtic Manor Resort near Newport in South Wales is the direct result of the remarkable vision of a remarkable Welshman - and the skill and determination of the multi-national team he built to create one of the world’s finest golf and convention resorts.

Sir Terence Matthews OBE, who had emigrated from Wales to Canada and made a fortune in telecommunications, saw the potential in an unused 19th Century mansion which had once been the home of a coal magnate. Restoring the building as a hotel, he and his team went on to create a facility which boasts not one but three courses:

  • Roman Road
  • Coldra Woods
  • Wentwood Hills

Wentwood Hills is built to United States Golf Association Standards.

The resort is now the home of the Wales Open and is building up to hosting the Ryder Cup in 2010. The challenge for Director of Golf Jim McKenzie is clear: to keep the courses at peak condition – month in, month out – a task in which they will continue to be assisted by Inturf.

Radisson Roe Park finds Providence with Inturf

We have now supplied a total of 5,000 square metres of Providence Creeping Bent for greens at the renowned Radisson Roe Park Golf Club, one of the best 18-hole parkland golf courses in the north of Ireland.

Set amidst the beautiful countryside of the Roe Valley – with mountains to the south and the sea to the north – the Roe Park course provides a challenging combination of water hazards and natural features – not only for players.

"The geographical location and the effects of climate change make this a challenging course to maintain at the standards we set ourselves," says Lawrence McIlroy, Course Manager. "I’m gradually bringing the course up to USGA standards and, for the last three years, Inturf have been an important part of that process with the supply of material of exceptional quality."

Technical Note

The sand dominant rootzone on the course calls for extra care in the production process to ensure compatibility.

A large part of the skill of our work is to understand and cater for the conditions in which the new turf will be laid.

There is no such thing as a standard golf course which is why our custom grown turf is such a big factor in the success of courses like Roe Park.

On the right course with Inturf

World class golf courses and golf course architects turn to Inturf when they need the turf or the know-how to turn their ideas into reality.

Whether it's a new build course or the restoration or relocation of selected fairways, bunkers or greens, you can benefit from the same expertise and experience.

But it isn't only in golf that we excel. Leading football and rugby clubs and some of the best known landscape architects in the UK specify Inturf for all kinds of situation.

In fact, there probably isn't a turfing problem that we haven't encountered - and solved!

Here are some of Inturf's recent projects around the UK:
